As human beings, we desire attachment, belonging and connection. The relationships we form with other people can be incredibly durable, not only with individuals in our present, but also with people in our past and future. The more we discover about our past and great the connection we will feel to our ancestors. And as we record our own history we can open the door for future generations to reach out and connect with us after we are gone.
Learning the history of our ancestors gives us an understanding of the challenges they faced. This often inspires greater love and compassion for their flaws and mistakes, and this compassion easily translates to our relationships with living individuals, both within and outside of our families. We all face hard things. Remembering that fact in the context of others shortcomings allows us to be better employees, managers, spouses, parents, children, siblings, friends and human beings.
Knowing our family history builds resilience. In learning about our ancestors’ lives we can see patterns of behavior and of overcoming failures and surviving hard times. Their stories remind us that not everything in life will come easily and that disappointments occur and inequalities exist but that we can recover, triumph and find happiness in spite of hardships.
